Folks,
I know this has been asked before by someone, but it looks like the previous thread is a little dated, so I thought I'd ask again.
I'm very interested in Karting. Have been since the first time I saw a race, and from the moment I drove an indoor kart at a commercial track. As someone who is COMPLETELY blind to most aspects of the sport (types of leagues/classes, costs, setups, etc.) I thought I'd solicit some advice and knowledge from anyone willing to give it.
It looks like I'm "fairly" close to a few tracks -- I'm located in Chattanooga, TN -- so my interest in starting racing has been reignited.
My questions are:
-- Are opportunities (number of racetracks/races) more numerous in Oval or Road course racing? I know there is a dirt track close by in Chatsworth, but the street racing up in Shelbyville and Nashville looks like a lot more fun.
-- What is the approximate start up costs to race in a league? Obviously, I'd have to find a Kart (the big expense), and purchase safety gear. Do you also pay to be in a league AND pay to race every time? The one obstacle that's always held me back, and I fear it still will, is money. Is it at all affordable??
-- ASSUMING I can afford to race, and can save for a kart, how bad a decision would it be to purchase a used kart? Essentially: Can I be competitive (if I can drive well) in a used kart? Or will the rich blow me away? (not that having the fastest equipment is necessary for having a good time)...
That's all I can think of at the moment. I'd appreciate any and all info. Thanks in advance!!
- Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Karting is a great sport, I have enjoyed my 5 years of involvement. I can't speak of the oval racing as all I have ever done is sprint (road course pavement)racing. There is the track we run in Nashville at the Fairgrounds, a track in Dawsonville,GA (www.atlantamotorsportspark.com) which we are headed to later today for a race tomorrow. A potential track in Alabama is in the works and as well as the new Corvette track in Bowling Green, KY.
Ben at Kart Warehouse in Nashville (615-818-0663) has an arrive n drive program for the LO 206 class which has become a great new class for SEKA this year as well as many places around the country.
If I can be of any further help just ask.
Good Luck. Chad

Since you are in Chattanooga, contact Lynn Haddock at Haddock LTD. for advice. Multi time National Champ and his shop is just East of Chattanooga.

I have a like new Margay chassis that would be great for TaG or LO206 class. The chassis currently has an older Rotax motor on it. I have a number of seats, electronics, and safety equipment available as well. If interested give me a call. 931-446-8203
Most of the people on this site can vouch for the quality of my equipment.
If you feel adventurous, I have three shifter motors that would be very competitive. Two of the motors were built by Swedetech for a US Champion.
If you you are feeling like you want to mix it up
